Please describe your day-to-day role.

My role as a site operative is to help complete tasks on site such as demolition, installations and general maintenance. Each day can bring a different task but it is important that I am always working to British standards and HSE guidelines.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

I have always been interested in becoming an engineer to learn physical skills and master a craft where I can create something.

Why did an apprenticeship appeal to you?

I had heard good things about them and wanted a way to educate myself within the field.

How would you describe your journey?

It has been difficult starting out in a new industry that can sometimes be demanding. However, I enjoy challenging myself and learning new skills so it has been an overall worthy experience.

How has your apprenticeship given you the skills and knowledge you need for a rewarding career?

It provides me with fulfilment and confidence to see my skills put to use, and I am always learning from both my mistakes and successes.

What do you see as the main benefits/advantages of this route into a career versus the traditional university route?

It provides more stability having an income whilst being in education. I also feel like it provides a steady work/education balance whereas university seems more overwhelming.

Doing jobs on my own and being trusted to do a good job has been a huge milestone for me as it has given me a sense of independence and purpose.

What is the best part of being an apprentice at Build 4 Growth Ltd?

I am always pushed to be better.

What tips and/or advice would you give to other people looking to do an apprenticeship?

Put yourself in that industry field and get a good idea of what branch suits you best.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years’ time?

I would like to have increased my skills to the point where I am in charge of jobs and can determine the best solution for problems I might face.

Insight from Seth Alderson, Managing Director, Build 4 Growth Ltd

What benefits has taking on an apprentice through the Close Brothers SME Apprentice Programme brought to your business?

The programme has enabled our experienced steel fabricators to pass on their specialist knowledge to the next generation, supported by grant funding that has reduced the financial burden of training.

Have you employed an apprentice before?

Yes. We have supported apprentices for over 20 years across various construction trades including roofing, joinery, and electrical. This is our first steel fabrication apprentice, and we hope to continue developing talent in this area.

How important are high quality apprenticeship programmes?

They are vital to sustaining the development of our workforce. As technology and AI continue to reshape office-based roles, high-quality apprenticeships will be essential for creating skilled trade opportunities for future generations.

What impact has Jack had across your business?

Jack has developed strong fabrication skills and contributed to our workflow. His training ensures he is well-prepared for a career in fabrication, whether he remains with us or pursues opportunities elsewhere.

What do you see as the benefits of your apprentice being trained at The University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre?

The Training Centre allows us to work with apprentices aged 18 and over, which is essential given the nature of our projects that require travel and work away from home.

What advice would you give to apprentices starting out on their journeys?

Be attentive, follow the guidance of both your employer and training provider, and stay committed to your development. This approach earns respect and helps secure long-term opportunities in your chosen industry.
